Dual Yokes DIY ManualVolume 1 – $20.00

We offer what we feel is the most comprehensive DIY dual yoke plan set you will find online. After many years of research and prototyping we are proud to offer you the best and most cost-effective professional level designs for any affordable DIY flight sim. 

The DIY manual and plan set includes options for both horizontal and vertical style designs and gives specific details and measurements for installing dual yokes in every SimSamurai cockpit design. You will easily be able to install the assembly into to any cockpit we offer, or can adapt our design philosophy into your own design, or that of any other cockpit manufacturer. Once you understand the basic mechanical components of flight control hardware you may never want to purchase store-bought equipment again. With a little time and effort you can get professional results and have robust hardware, which can often include repurposing actual aircraft surplus controls as shown with the Bombardier CRJ pedestal yokes in images. This particular surplus set is notoriously difficult to use..but we executed the redesign perfectly.

While this builder manual includes details for airliner style vertical stanchion/pedestal style yokes as seen in the images, it is mainly focused on horizontally mounted “telescopic style” yokes found in GA aircraft. While it does of course includes many details for pedestal style yokes, it’s just that every version in every style of large aircraft cannot be fully examined.

Importantly, the included design for our GA yoke offering only takes up 4.5″ of height to ensure your total dash height stays low for proper ergonomics. This means it helps to keep the horizon line at eye level and not higher. Once you understand how this works and the various options available to you, you can choose from a multitude of options.

Custom Fabrication Services

SimSamurai offers both the DIY manual for building dual mechanically linked yokes by yourself or you can choose to have us fabricate them for you.  We now also offer throttle designs for both single and multi-engine aircraft. If you are interested in our fabrication services, prices typically start at $1,000 for a professional quality multi-engine throttle set made of metal components, phenolics, and 3D printed parts. For dual yokes, prices are $1,750 for a standard set of general aviation style horizontally mounted yokes and this includes cost of two Cessna, Piper, or Beech style yoke horns (providing each horn costs no more than $350 each), or, you can send us a set you may already own to reduce total costs.  Lastly, airliner style dual-linked floor mounted “pedestal style” yokes common to business jets and airliners cost anywhere from $3,500 to $5,000 to fabricate and this includes cost of the airliner yoke horns (the actual controls yours hands are on) which are commonly at least $500 each.  Therefore final pricing is largely based on actual costs of the selected flight control yoke horns themselves and can vary overall due to the desired level of fidelity for all components which may or may not include force feedback. Adding force feedback to either set typically costs an additional $1000.

DIY Dual Control Yoke Manual

The DIY dual yokes plan set allows DIY builders to create their own set of professional quality flight yokes which are mechanically linked to one another.  This package is sold as a PDF file which includes all builder details, plans, blueprints and diagrams necessary for project completion.  Please note that while this provides key details and drawing of dual yoke construction, both horizontal “telescopic” style as well vertical “pedestal style” it of course cannot provide every single detail of these two types for all aircraft as that would require thousands of pages of documentation. While more various types and styles of dual yoke construction will eventually be covered (and all upgrades are free to you), the current V1 edition primarily details how to build horizontally mounted spring tension style of dual control flight simulator yokes for under $200 (plus cost of the actual yoke horns / handles). Similarly, it contains details for fabrication of the vertical pedestal style with spring and hydraulic tension.

For the telescopic style, this low cost design can be sandwiched into just 4.5 inches of vertical space making it ideal for all SimSamurai cockpit designs or any cockpit for that matter as it minimizes use of space and importantly allow for the lowest dash height possible for best visual ergonomics. This is extremely important because yoke columns and tubes in General Aviation (GA) aircraft are commonly set at least 4 to 6″ up into the instrument panel. Therefore if 20″ to 24″ displays are used for instruments, this means the yoke tube must sit directly under the display which in turn raises the display above common visual dash height. In turn this forces upper visual displays to also be set higher. The end result of this, as seen in countless simulators, is a problem of ergonomics which quickly creates neck strain. Therefore we take this into careful consideration with all of our product designs, both with hardware and with our cockpit shell enclosure designs.

Additional varieties of floor mounted pedestal style yokes and force feedback yokes will eventually be fully covered in later revisions but please know these that force-feedback designs are not currently detailed in the V1 edition but are still discussed for purposes of familiarization and detail how they operate and contain links to aid in this feature, but because of all the possible variables it does not yet include actual technical drawings for vertical style force-feedback designs.

Regardless, this highly detailed technical manual on building dual-linked mechanical flight yokes is bar none the most comprehensive product you will find on this subject and the included SimSamurai designs have been refined to perfection and will allow you to use our designs and concepts in your own simulator project.   Lastly, once purchased, all future upgrades of this manual are 100% free.
